AI Usage Policy

General Principles

The scientific journal «Environment & Health» adheres to international recommendations regarding the use of artificial intelligence technologies in scientific publications, in particular the principles of the STM Association (International Association of Scientific, Technical, and Medical Publishers https://stm-assoc.org/document/recommendations-for-a-classification-of-ai -use-in-academic-manuscript-preparation/) and EASE (European Association of Science Editors https://ease.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/EASE_Guidelines-May2021-Ukrainian.pdf).
The journal recognizes the potential of AI tools as an aid, but emphasizes that human intellectual activity is the foundation of scientific work.

Key restrictions

Prohibition on the use of AI to generate scientific conclusions.

The use of artificial intelligence tools is not permitted for:

  • formulating scientific conclusions;
  • interpreting research results;
  • generating scientific hypotheses or generalizations.

All scientific conclusions and analytical generalizations must be the result of the authors’ independent work.

Authors’ Responsibility

Authors bear full responsibility for:

  • the reliability and accuracy of the data;
  • the originality of the text;
  • the scientific validity of the results.

Artificial intelligence tools may not be listed as authors or co-authors of a scientific article.

Permissible Areas of AI Use

Authors may use AI tools for:

  • text editing (grammar, style, translation);
  • technical formatting of the manuscript;
  • auxiliary data analysis, provided there is full control and verification of the results;
  • preparation of illustrative materials (without distorting scientific data).

Prohibited uses of AI

The following are prohibited:

  • generating scientific text, research results, or conclusions without substantial authorial contribution;
  • using AI to fabricate, falsify, or manipulate data;
  • creating fictitious references or sources;
  • listing AI tools as co-authors of the publication;
  • concealing the fact that AI was used.

Disclosure Requirements

When using AI technologies, authors are required to:

  • clearly state the use of AI in the text of the article (for example, in the “Methods” or “Acknowledgments” section);
  • specify the name of the tool and the nature of its application (for example: language editing, auxiliary analysis, data visualization);
  • confirm that all results have been verified by the authors and comply with the principles of scientific integrity;
  • assume full responsibility for the content of the submitted work.

Authors’ Responsibility

Authors bear full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and scientific value of the materials, regardless of the use of AI technologies.
The editorial board reserves the right to reject or retract an article in the event of a violation of this policy.

Format for Providing Information

If AI is used in the manuscript, a separate section must be included before the reference list: «Declaration on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI),»

which must specify:

  • the name of the AI tool;
  • the scope of application;
  • confirmation of the authors’ responsibility for the content of the work.
